Poopiehead 7"

Since Metal Mark posted on Saturday, I figured that left Monday open for a fun bonus post:

This little EP is bold enough to ask the question we've all wanted to ask, but didn't have the guts. Not only does it ask, but it also has the answer.

This indie pop 7" was released in 1996, but I actually got it about five years ago when I ordered some stuff from Texas-based Peek-a-Boo Records. Their site has some info about if for anyone who's interested, but you'll have to check Ebay if you want a copy, because it's out of print. The only thing really notable about Poopiehead (other than the obvious philosophical question they have answered for us) is that their studio drummer was Spoon's Jim Eno.

Interesting reactions from the various poopies. Some of them, particularly the little guy closest to the Poopie Eater, seem excited to be eaten. But most seem to be unhappy, especially the little one in the back who has apparently died of fright.

Why is the happy poopie so happy? Is he a suicidal poopie? Perhaps he's a member of the Poopie Eater cult, and he's being taken home by his God? Or maybe he's oblivious to his impending doom, and he's smiling at how good it is to be poopie.

I find this cover to be disturbing. The questions it raises trouble me, and the ease with which the artist dismisses these concerns is haphazard and disrespectful to the audience.

Thanks for posting this, Bob. You've completely ruined my day.

I, on the other hand, laughed my ass off at it. Guess that makes me a simpleton.

Chuck - It's nice to see that someone else was able to dig deep into the philosophical implications of this cover. What makes that poopie so happy? What makes people in general so happy? It's hard to say.

Ray - You probably laughed at Airplane too, didn't you? That either makes you a simpleton or a genius. With Poopiehead in the mix, it's hard to tell.

Mark - I liked the colors too. It is just what I always imagine the Big Red Poopie Eater would look like.

Ya'know taotechuck, how often do you smile... even though your ultimate fate is death. I strongly believe it's the happy poopie thats got it right. We all go sometime... why be frightened like all the other poopies in the world?

Amen to that, Anon. We're all gonna go, and I'd rather be smiling than freaking out during my last act on Earth.
